One of the drawbacks of working a retail job is that your hours change weekly. One week, I’ll do shifts that start early in the day. I get off before my son and husband come home. I can get the household stuff done, make dinner, and get an hour or two of writing in.

Others, I have to do as much as I can before work…and leave a meal in our crock pot…because I’ll have enough time when I get home to eat, bathe, and get in bed because I have to be at work early the next day.

Today’s one of those. Off at 6, and I have to be up and on my way to work tomorrow by 6:30 am.

So, I’m pushing through a bunch of stuff instead of writing. I took care of some volunteer stuff that needed doing, got 2 loads of laundry through the machines and put away, dishes, and their dinner is in the works.

I’m striving for time tomorrow afternoon to write. Or Friday, as I’m off. But I’m also prepping for our D&D game on Saturday. Which I’m running.

This is one reason books take time to write. Authors rarely get to just sit down for 8 hours and write. Most of us have 1-2 days a week where we can spend serious time at the keyboard. The rest of the week, we’re finding an hour here, thirty minutes there. Or bolting out of bed at 3 am to get the scene we just dreamed out.

We want to do this for 8 hours a day. We really do. I’d love to spend 40 hours a week writing! But I have bills to pay, groceries to buy, and all that stuff.

Life doesn’t stop simply because we’re writers.
